This blog was written in 2017, and as we know, Instagram has changed dramatically since then. If you would like to read a more up-to-date blog about the social media platform, click here!

Instagram's Rapidly Increasing Power

Instagram is quickly becoming the most popular social media platform in the world. Of course, its size isn’t yet comparable to Facebook’s, but its growth is still hugely impressive. From January to April of this year, it’s gone from 100 million new followers to 700 million, confirming its status as the fastest growing social platform.  Instagram has the power to leverage your business and help your influence and supporters grow.

Here are a few other statistics that showcase Instagram's value:

• Highest engagement across all social media (over 9%)

• In March 2017, over 120 million Instagrammers visited a website, got directions, called, emailed, or direct messaged to learn about a business based on an Instagram ad

• 8 million registered businesses are using Instagram business profiles

• 60% of users say that they have learned about a product or service on the platform

• 100 million users use the “stories” feature daily

• Instagram posts with at least one hashtag (#) average 12.6% more engagement than those without

In the Hospitality Community, we have properties with a combined following of over 80,000 followers on Instagram. Instagram is proving to be our most effective platform.  I believe that this is due to its simplicity, features, aesthetically pleasing style, and the fact that if you follow a page, it’s almost impossible to miss new posts.

The strong influence of Instagram in Hospitality industry

Not only does Instagram provide us with amazing pictures and information from around the world, but it has started to develop its business side. IG went from offering product promotions to now allowing businesses to have business profiles. This enables followers to quickly and directly contact a store or visit their website. All it takes is the touch of a button to be in a situation where you can be in direct contact with a property.

So why do Instagram and the world of Hospitality mix so well? In a word, images. I have said this before: your photos and videos sell your property. Where Facebook and Twitter are words-based, Instagram is all about the visuals. A property with stunning views or niche features will always succeed there.

Take La Rosa Hotel in Whitby for example. It is one of the most “Instagrammable” hospitality businesses I have ever visited. Here's what their guests are posting about them on a daily basis.
